Workshops and Parties!
What is Scratchboard?
Scratchboard is a black-and-white drawing medium. The board itself is a hardboard panel with a thin coating of fine, white clay covered by a layer of india ink. The drawing surface starts completely black.
How do you use Scratch art tools?
Tools used for scratch art typically include a scratch knife or craft knife although almost anything that can scratch into the surface of the scratchboard can be used. Techniques for scratch art include simply etching into the surface to create a line drawing, using stippling or cross-hatching to create shading effects, and scraping away large areas of the surface to create highlights.
How do you add color to a scratchboard?
After creating a design on scratchboard by scraping away areas of the top surface, it is easy to color the image. Alcohol-based ink is added to the white, etched areas to add color. Once dried, those colored areas can even be partially etched again to create even more subtle areas of highlight and other effects.
